A first birthday is mostly for the adults, and everyone knows it. The baby will be overwhelmed by 2pm and asleep by 4.
So plan for the two things that actually matter: photographs you will keep, and a setup that does not cost you the whole morning.
The one thing worth spending on
A backdrop. One good corner of the room, decorated properly, is worth more than decorations scattered everywhere.
Every photo you keep from the day will be taken in front of it — the cake smash, the family shot, the one where they are wearing more frosting than clothing. Everything else is background noise.

The checklist
- Balloon garland — 6 to 8 feet is right for a dessert table; 10 feet or more for a full wall
- Number 1 balloon — foil, and larger than you think
- Highchair decoration — a small cluster or a banner across the tray
- Cake topper — it is in every cake photo
- Candle — even though they cannot blow it out
- Tableware that matches, if the table is in shot
That is the whole list. Everything beyond it is optional.

What to skip
Decorating the whole room. Guests look at the backdrop and the cake table. The far wall does not matter.
Confetti balloons at floor level. A one-year-old plus loose confetti is a job for later.
Anything requiring the baby to cooperate. Props, hats, a themed outfit for the whole day. Take the photo early while they are still fresh.
The timeline that works
Two weeks before: order everything at once. One box, one delivery, nothing missing on the day.
The night before: build the balloon garland. It takes about an hour, it holds its shape for weeks indoors, and doing it the night before is the single biggest stress reducer available to you.
The morning of: hang the garland, inflate the number balloon, set the table. Thirty minutes.
An hour before guests: take your photos. Baby is fed, clean and awake. This is the window.

Themes that photograph well at one
Safari and jungle, because the animal balloons give the backdrop shape. Under the sea, for the color range. Boho neutrals if you want the photos to look good on a wall in five years. Baby Shark, because they will point at it and everyone will film that.
Whatever you choose, keep the palette to three colors and a metallic. shop by color if you already have a cake or an outfit to match.
Questions we get asked
How far in advance should I order?
Two weeks is comfortable. We ship from California in 2 to 5 business days, but ordering early gives you room to fix anything.
How big should the balloon garland be?
6 to 8 feet behind a dessert table. 10 feet or more if you are covering a wall.
Can I build the decorations the night before?
Yes, and you should. Air-filled garlands hold for weeks indoors.
